How to Add Tokenized Real-World Assets to a Crypto Exchange Trading Platform
Introduction
Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization is moving beyond proof-of-concept experiments and into active financial infrastructure. Tokenized Treasuries, private credit, commodities, funds, and equities are gaining traction as financial institutions look for blockchain-based ways to issue, transfer, settle, and manage traditional assets.
The opportunity is particularly relevant for crypto exchanges. Instead of limiting their marketplaces to cryptocurrencies, exchanges can add compliant tokenized assets and create a bridge between traditional finance and digital-asset markets.

According to CoinGecko's 2026 RWA report, tokenized RWAs grew to $19.3 billion by the end of Q1 2026, more than tripling from the beginning of 2025. Tokenized Treasuries remained the largest segment, while commodities and tokenized stocks also expanded rapidly.
So, how can an exchange actually integrate these assets?
1. Choose the Right RWA Categories
The first step is not technical development. It is deciding which assets the exchange will support.
Tokenized Treasuries are currently one of the most established categories because they provide on-chain exposure to traditional fixed-income instruments. Private credit is another important segment because tokenization can make traditionally illiquid loans more transferable. Commodities such as gold and tokenized funds are also becoming significant trading categories.
For an exchange, the initial asset selection could therefore include:
- Tokenized Treasury products
- Gold and other tokenized commodities
- Private-credit instruments
- Tokenized funds
- Real-estate-backed tokens
- Compliant tokenized equities where permitted
Each asset requires different legal, custody, pricing, and transfer rules. A tokenized property cannot simply be treated like BTC or ETH.
