How Previous-Year Questions Can Improve Competitive Exam Preparation

Maintaining a simple mistake record can make this process easier. Candidates can note the question, the reason for the mistake, the correct concept, and whether they have encountered a similar error before.

Over time, this creates a personalised list of topics that require revision.

Improve Speed and Accuracy

Competitive examinations often require candidates to balance speed with accuracy. Knowing the answer is useful, but being able to solve a question efficiently is equally important.

Timed practice with previous-year papers can help candidates understand which questions take longer than expected. With regular practice, they can develop better time-management and question-selection habits.

However, speed should not be the first priority. Candidates should initially focus on understanding questions and solving them correctly. Once accuracy becomes consistent, they can gradually introduce time limits.

This approach can prevent a common problem where candidates attempt questions quickly but make avoidable errors.

A useful practice routine can involve three stages:

Accuracy first → controlled speed → timed examination practice

This gradual progression allows candidates to build confidence without sacrificing correctness.

Make Revision More Effective

Revision becomes more useful when it is based on actual performance.
