How Predictive Market Analytics Can Strengthen Ferrous Metals Purchasing Strategies
Ferrous metals followed different paths during September 2026.
Why did the usual fall steel surge completely stall out this year? While September traditionally brings a wave of seasonal momentum across global metal markets, recent data reveals a starkly different reality: domestic demand in major manufacturing hubs softened faster than mills could adjust output, even as input costs squeezed profit margins worldwide.

Data from Grand View Signal’s Ferrous Metals Pricing Intelligence report highlights how steel scrap emerged as the month's top-performing ferrous commodity segment across major geographies, averaging a 4.3% month-on-month growth with moderate volatility. Yet, beneath that headline gain, structural pressures in Asia, regulatory shifts in Europe, and shifting trade flows created an unusually unpredictable landscape for buyers and producers alike.
To understand where the market is headed, let's break down the five core market drivers shaping the global ferrous metal landscape today.
Is China’s Autumn Steel Demand Recovery Losing Steam?
In short, yes. September is traditionally dubbed ‘Golden September’ in China, a period when industrial activity resumes after the summer lull and construction projects accelerate. However, this year’s seasonal pick-up fell well short of domestic steelmakers' expectations. The primary culprit remains an ongoing slump in real estate construction, which heavily restricted rebar sales, while orders for hot-rolled coil (HRC) also dropped below levels recorded a year earlier.
In an effort to balance the market, Chinese mills scaled back production around mid-month. Average daily crude-steel output among producers monitored by the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) dipped below the rates seen during the opening ten days of September. Yet, despite those production curbs, finished-steel stockpiles continued to climb at mill yards.
The numbers highlight this clear supply-demand mismatch:
- 17.08 Million Tons: Total finished-steel inventories sitting at CISA-monitored mills by September 20.
- 5.1% Increase: The month-on-month stock rise compared to late August.
- CNY 3,320 per Ton: Domestic HRC price assessment on September 24 (down CNY 80 from end-August).
- CNY 3,090 per Ton: Domestic rebar price assessment on September 24 (down CNY 30 from end-August).
This combination of lower output and higher inventories proves that downstream end-user consumption eroded faster than mills adjusted supply. While Chinese exporters moved surplus material into international channels, foreign sales failed to restore pricing power at home. With elevated stocks leading into the National Day holiday, buyers had little reason to accelerate purchases.

Was the Early Iron Ore Price Rally Real or Just Pre-Holiday Hype?
Raw material markets briefly tracked an upward trajectory at the start of September as Chinese steelmakers rushed to replenish iron ore ahead of Golden Week holiday disruptions. This initial wave of pre-holiday procurement provided immediate support to the seaborne market, briefly pushing prices higher before momentum fizzled out.
- Above USD 100 per Ton: The 62% Fe benchmark delivered to Qingdao crossed this threshold on September 4.
- USD 96.6 per Ton: The same 62% Fe benchmark by September 25, completely unwinding its early gains.
Once steelmakers fulfilled their immediate operational needs, buying interest dried up. Weaker-than-expected finished-steel sales and rising iron ore inventories at major ports gave procurement managers far more leverage over order timing. At the same time, steelmaker profit margins came under severe pressure from rising coking coal and coke costs, making mills far more cautious about accepting higher ore prices.
This rapid reversal shows why short periods of raw-material restocking should not be interpreted as a lasting demand recovery. Moving forward, ore purchasing remains strictly tied to blast-furnace operating rates, inventory buffers, and the prices mills can extract for finished steel.

Why Did Indian Steel Prices Rise While International Buyers Hesitated?
While Chinese steel markets struggled under inventory pressure, Indian steelmakers navigated an entirely different set of operating conditions. Indian mills faced a sharp increase in production costs during September, primarily driven by rising international metallurgical coal prices, a critical factor for integrated producers reliant on imported coking coal to feed their blast furnaces.

At the same time, domestic spot availability tightened across the country:
- Planned Maintenance: Major domestic steelworks undertook scheduled overhauls, reducing spot market volume.
- Lean Supply Chains: Distributors entered September with relatively thin inventory buffers.
- Post-Monsoon Sentiment: Expectations of stronger infrastructure build-outs and automotive procurement after the monsoon supported buyer interest.
These supply factors allowed Indian steelmakers to push HRC offers higher between August and early September, where it observed a 4% growth in prices. However, producers could not pass on every increase in raw material costs to buyers. Imports continued to expand, with Chinese steel accounting for a substantial portion of incoming finished products. Because buyers could easily consider competitive foreign alternatives, domestic pricing power hit a clear ceiling even as coal costs climbed.
