If you are looking at 12 solar panels for your home, the number gives you a useful starting point, but it does not tell you the final price. The output of each panel, roof condition, inverter, installation work and optional battery storage can all change the figure.

Energy Saving Trust currently puts the cost of an average home solar system at around £7,600. It also says a typical 4.5kWp system uses around 12 panels and needs roughly 20–30m² of roof space. That makes 12 panels a useful reference point for a typical household, although your own quotation may be higher or lower.

The first detail to check is the wattage of the panels. Twelve 400W panels would create a 4.8kWp system, while twelve 450W panels would give you 5.4kWp. Twelve 500W panels would take the system to 6kWp.

That difference matters because you are not really buying “12 panels”. You are buying a complete electricity-generating system with a particular capacity.

Energy Saving Trust's current figure of around £7,600 is based on a typical domestic installation, rather than a fixed price per panel. Installation costs can change according to system size, roof access, panel type and the work required at the property.

So, use £7,600 as a broad reference rather than expecting an installer to quote exactly that amount.
