How EdTech Vendors Can Identify the Right Faith-Based Schools for Outreach | EducationDataLists
Introduction
EdTech vendors targeting faith-based schools need more than a large contact database. They need to identify institutions whose grade levels, technology requirements, budgets, governance structures, and educational priorities align with the products they offer. A school’s religious affiliation can help define an initial audience, but it does not automatically reveal whether that school needs a particular learning platform, assessment tool, classroom device, or administrative solution.
The opportunity is significant. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), religiously oriented schools accounted for 19,628 of the 29,727 U.S. private K–12 schools covered by its 2021–22 survey—66% of the total. Although these figures are not a current census, they illustrate the diversity of the faith-based education market. For EdTech marketers, the challenge is turning that broad audience into a verified, relevant prospect segment.
1. Define the Faith-Based School Market Before Building a List
Religious schools are not a single, uniform market. They vary in educational philosophy, school size, grade coverage, ownership, governance, and purchasing processes. Vendors that treat every faith-based institution as having the same needs risk spending resources on poorly matched prospects.
The NCES Private School Universe Survey provides useful segmentation data. Its 2021–22 tables recorded 6,122 Roman Catholic schools, representing 20.6% of all private schools in the survey. The same data identify other religious orientations, including Amish, Baptist, Mennonite, Pentecostal, and Seventh-day Adventist schools. These categories demonstrate why a broad religious-school label is not enough for precise targeting.
EdTech vendors should begin by defining their ideal customer profile (ICP) around relevant institutional characteristics:
- Religious affiliation or network: Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Seventh-day Adventist, Jewish, Islamic, or another school community, where accurately documented.
- Grade levels: Early childhood, elementary, middle school, high school, or combined K–12.
- School size: Enrollment bands that match the product’s capacity and pricing model.
- Technology requirements: Learning management, student information systems, digital curricula, assessment, cybersecurity, or communication tools.
- Governance: Independent school leadership, a governing board, a diocesan office, or another administrative structure.
A Religious Schools Email List becomes more valuable when its records support these distinctions. The purpose is not to assume that affiliation determines purchasing behavior, but to use it as one institutional attribute alongside verified needs and operational characteristics.
2. Use Education-Sector Research to Prioritize Prospects
A focused outreach strategy should draw on reliable school data rather than relying exclusively on commercial contact records.
The NCES Private School Universe Survey collects information about private schools, including religious orientation, grade levels, enrollment, teacher counts, school-day length, and school-year length. Its survey data can help marketers establish a baseline for understanding school categories and institutional characteristics.
For a more recent example within a specific segment, the National Catholic Educational Association’s 2024–25 statistical report announcement, published in April 2025, reported 5,852 Catholic schools serving 1,683,506 students in the United States.
These figures illustrate the scale of one faith-based school segment, but they should not be extrapolated to all religious schools or treated as a count of potential EdTech buyers. Vendors still need to determine which institutions fit their product, geography, and commercial model.
A practical research workflow is to:
- Identify the school categories that match the product.
- Build an initial institution list from credible education-sector sources.
- Confirm each school's current status and official website.
- Review the school’s existing technology, programs, and publicly stated priorities.
- Verify relevant professional contacts before outreach.
This approach helps marketers distinguish a school that merely fits a demographic category from one with a plausible business need.
3. Identify the Right Decision-Maker at Each School
Finding the correct institution is only half the task. EdTech purchases can involve several stakeholders, and the person who uses a product may not be the person who approves its purchase.
Depending on the product and school structure, relevant contacts may include:
- Head of school or principal
- Technology director or IT administrator
- Curriculum director or academic leader
- Admissions or enrollment director
- Business manager or finance leader
- Department head or classroom educator
- Network-level or diocesan technology administrator
For example, a vendor selling classroom learning software may need input from teachers and curriculum leaders, while a cybersecurity provider may need to speak with IT leadership. A platform intended for multiple schools in a network may require engagement with a central administrative office.
The NCEA’s 2024–25 Catholic school figures demonstrate the importance of understanding organizational scale: thousands of schools operate within this one segment alone. However, the number of schools does not establish that all use the same procurement model.
When evaluating a Religious Schools Mailing List, check whether it distinguishes school-level contacts from network-level administrators and includes useful role information. Verify titles against official school websites or other credible institutional sources. Do not assume that a principal controls every technology decision or that a technology contact has budget authority.
