How Do You Prevent Decorative Items From Breaking During a Move?

Shares 7 proven tips for packing decorative items safely, preventing damage, and making your move easier and more organized.

Wrap every fragile piece separately.

Start by placing several sheets of packing paper around the item. Then add bubble wrap for additional impact protection.

For unusually delicate pieces, create multiple layers:

  1. Wrap the item in packing paper.
  2. Add a layer of bubble wrap.
  3. Secure the wrap with tape.
  4. Add another protective layer if necessary.
  5. Place the item in a cushioned box.
  6. Fill all surrounding gaps.

Don't place tape directly on valuable artwork, painted surfaces, or delicate finishes. Tape can leave residue or cause surface damage.

For ceramic figurines with arms, wings, handles, or other protruding parts, pay special attention to those weak points. Wrap them individually rather than allowing them to press against the main body.

Filling Empty Spaces

Once the first item is placed in the box, don't immediately add another.

Add cushioning between objects.

If you're packing multiple ceramic pieces, create layers separated by packing paper or foam. Heavier pieces should generally stay toward the bottom, while lighter items should go above them.

After filling the box, gently shake it.

If you can hear or feel objects moving, stop and add more cushioning.
