GPT-INDIA Cyclone Dust Collector: A Practical Guide to Mechanical Dust Separation

Abrasive Dust and Material Selection

Some industrial dusts can cause significant wear because of their abrasive characteristics.

Particles travelling at high velocity can gradually erode internal surfaces, particularly around areas where airflow direction changes.

The material and construction of the cyclone should therefore be evaluated according to the dust's abrasive behaviour.

For demanding applications, wear protection or suitable material selection may be incorporated into the design.

This is another reason why process information is important when specifying industrial dust collection equipment.

Moisture and Sticky Dust

Cyclones generally perform best when the particulate matter behaves appropriately under dry mechanical-separation conditions.

Moisture or sticky material can change dust behaviour and may lead to buildup on internal surfaces.

When the dust tends to adhere to the cyclone wall, the intended airflow pattern can be affected.

The moisture content and process temperature should therefore be understood before selecting a cyclone for a particular application.

If the process produces wet or chemically reactive material, another collection or treatment technology may be more appropriate.
