FSSAI License Registration 2026: Don’t Apply Until You Know These New Rules

Basic FSSAI License

The term Basic FSSAI License is commonly used for the approval applicable to smaller food businesses. Technically, FSSAI uses the term Registration for this category. It may apply to smaller food manufacturers, retailers, hawkers, restaurants, and other eligible food businesses.

FSSAI State License

An FSSAI State License generally applies to businesses covered under the State License scheme. Under the revised 2026 framework, this includes businesses with turnover more than ₹ ₹ 1.5 crore and up to 50 crore, subject to applicable criteria.

FSSAI Central License

An FSSAI Central License applies to businesses falling within the Central License category.

Under the revised threshold, businesses with turnover above 50 crore fall within this category, along with businesses requiring Central licensing based on specified regulatory criteria.

Who Needs FSSAI Registration or License

The food industry businesses that fall under the FSSAI umbrella can consist of the following:

• Restaurant chains
• Cloud kitchens
• Catering services
• Food distributors
• Distributors and suppliers
• Food storage businesses
• Food transporters
• Importers of food products
• Other covered Food Business Operators

FSSAI registration eligibility depends on the actual food business activity and applicable criteria, not simply whether the business is a proprietorship, partnership, company, or LLP.
