Diabetic Walking Shoes: How to Choose the Right Pair

Diabetic Walking Shoes: How to Choose the Right Pair

3. Extra Depth

Width is only one part of a good fit.

Some people with diabetes have swollen feet, a high instep, foot deformities, or orthotic inserts that require additional vertical space.

Extra-depth walking shoes can provide more room above the foot and reduce pressure from the upper.

If a shoe is wide but shallow, it may still feel uncomfortable because the top of the foot is being compressed.

4. Smooth Interior Materials

The inside of the shoe should be comfortable and free from unnecessary sources of friction.

Rough seams, bulky stitching, or stiff interior edges can rub against the skin during walking.

When trying on a pair, run your hand around the inside of the shoe. Pay particular attention to the toe area and other places where seams may come into contact with the foot.

5. Cushioned Footbeds

Walking shoes should provide adequate cushioning to improve comfort during repetitive activity.

A cushioned midsole and footbed can help absorb impact and reduce the feeling of fatigue during longer walks.

However, cushioning should be balanced with stability. A shoe that is extremely soft but unstable may not be suitable for every person.

6. A Stable Outsole

A stable outsole can provide support and traction on different surfaces.

Good grip is especially important when walking outdoors, where wet pavement, grass, gravel, and uneven surfaces may increase the risk of slipping.

Look for a sole that provides reliable traction while still allowing comfortable movement.

7. Adjustable Closures

Adjustability is particularly useful when foot size changes throughout the day.

Laces, hook-and-loop straps, and other adjustable systems allow you to modify the fit as needed.

If your feet swell after prolonged walking or standing, being able to loosen the shoe can provide additional room without requiring a different size.

8. Flexible Uppers

A flexible upper can accommodate natural foot movement and provide additional comfort.

Mesh and stretch fabrics are popular choices because they can adapt more easily to the shape of the foot. Breathable materials can also help reduce heat and moisture during longer walks.
