Diabetic Shoes: How to Choose Comfortable Footwear for Everyday Wear
A spacious toe box is one of the most useful features to look for when choosing diabetic footwear.
A narrow toe box can squeeze the toes together and create pressure around the front of the foot. A wider design gives the toes more room to sit naturally.
When trying on shoes, make sure:
- Your toes can move comfortably.
- Your longest toe does not press against the front.
- Your smaller toes are not squeezed against the sides.
- The upper does not rub against your toes.
- The forefoot feels comfortable when standing and walking.
The ADA recommends leaving some space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe when fitting new footwear.
Consider Extra-Wide Shoes
Some people need more than a standard-width shoe can provide.
Extra-wide footwear can offer additional room across the forefoot and sides of the foot. This can be particularly useful if conventional shoes feel restrictive or if your feet change in volume during the day.
Width options vary between brands, so it is important to check the manufacturer's measurements rather than relying solely on labels such as 2E, 4E, or 6E.
The right width should provide enough room without allowing your foot to slide excessively from side to side.
Extra Depth Can Be Helpful
Width is not the only measurement that matters.
