Common Drywall Problems in Homes and How to Repair Them

Common Drywall Problems in Homes and How to Repair Them

Learn how to identify common drywall problems, repair cracks and holes, address moisture damage, and prepare walls for painting.

A small hole behind a bedroom door or a crack above the living room window might not seem worth worrying about. Leave it for a few months, though, and it can become much more noticeable, particularly after the walls have been painted. Drywall takes plenty of everyday wear, from furniture bumps to loose fasteners and minor building movement.

The trick is knowing which marks need a simple patch and which ones deserve a closer look. A little surface damage is usually manageable, but recurring cracks and damp, swollen drywall can point to problems that filler and paint will not fix.

Cracks, Dents, and Other Common Drywall Problems

Cracks Around Doors, Windows, and Wall Joints

Take a look around the corners of windows and doors, where small cracks often appear first. Fine lines can also develop where two drywall sheets meet. Changes in temperature, humidity, or building movement may contribute to these marks, although the cause is not always obvious from the crack alone.

Some cracks remain unchanged for years. Others reopen shortly after being filled and painted. If a crack keeps returning, becomes wider, or appears alongside sticking doors or uneven surfaces, it is worth having the area assessed rather than repeatedly covering it with compound.

Nail Pops, Dents, and Holes

Nail pops look like little bumps beneath the paint. They occur when drywall fasteners shift or the board moves slightly. Dents and holes are more often the result of everyday accidents, such as a door handle hitting the wall or furniture scraping against it during a move.

A shallow dent may need only a small amount of joint compound. A hole that breaks through the board usually needs a patch, and larger openings may require a replacement section of drywall. The repair needs to sit level with the surrounding wall. Otherwise, the patch can remain visible even after the room has been repainted.

Water Stains and Soft Drywall

A yellow-brown stain on the ceiling, bubbling paint, or a wall that feels unusually soft should not be treated as a cosmetic problem. These signs can indicate a plumbing leak, roof leak, condensation, or moisture entering from outside.

Find and address the source of the water before arranging the repair. If the drywall has swollen, crumbled, or lost its strength, replacing the affected section may be necessary. Visible mould also requires appropriate assessment and handling. Painting over the stain will not resolve the underlying problem.

How to Repair Damaged Drywall Properly

Filling Small Holes and Dents

For a minor dent or small hole, start by removing loose material around the damaged spot. Apply a suitable joint compound with a filling knife, keeping the layer as even as possible. Deeper repairs may need more than one application, with sufficient drying time between coats.

Once the compound has dried, sand it lightly until the repaired area blends into the wall. There is no need to sand aggressively. Doing so can damage the paper covering the drywall and leave another imperfection to fix. Wipe away the dust before priming and painting.

A larger hole needs a different repair. Depending on its size and location, the damaged section may need a backing support and a fitted piece of drywall. Tape and joint compound are then used to finish the seams.

Dealing With Cracks and Nail Pops

Filling a crack without preparing the surface often leads to a repair that does not last. Remove loose compound first and check whether the crack follows a drywall joint. Joint tape may be needed to reinforce the repair before fresh compound is applied.

A nail pop also needs more than a quick dab of filler. The fastener and surrounding board need to be checked, and additional drywall screws may be required to secure the panel. Once the area is stable, the surface can be filled, sanded, and finished.

If the same crack or bump keeps coming back, stop and investigate why. Another layer of compound may hide the defect temporarily, but it will not correct movement or an unsecured board.

When Is Professional Drywall Repair Worth Considering?

Small holes are one thing. A damaged ceiling, a large opening in a wall, or several cracks appearing across a room can be much harder to put right without leaving visible marks. Water damage is another situation where a professional assessment can help establish what needs replacing and what can be retained.

Homeowners looking for drywall repair mississauga can review the available repair services when planning work on damaged interior walls. Because the linked page covers plaster repair, confirm that the service is suitable for the particular material and type of damage. Drywall and plaster are different materials, and their repair methods are not always interchangeable.
