Car Shipping Scams: How Scammers Use Fake Quotes to Win Your Business

A cheap car shipping quote can look like a great deal, especially when you're already paying for a move, flight, new home, or vehicle purchase. But when one auto transport quote is dramatically lower than every other estimate, that bargain deserves a closer look.

Car shipping scams often begin with an attractive price. A questionable company or broker may advertise a rate designed to win your business rather than accurately reflect what it will cost to transport your vehicle. Once you've booked and your pickup date approaches, the price may suddenly change.

Understanding how fake and misleading quotes work can help you recognize trouble before you pay a deposit or depend on a company to move your vehicle.

How Do Fake Car Shipping Quotes Work?

A fake or misleading car shipping quote is typically an estimate designed primarily to get a customer to commit.

Imagine requesting five quotes to ship your vehicle. Four companies estimate the job at roughly similar prices. The fifth offers a price hundreds of dollars cheaper.

Naturally, the cheapest option gets your attention.

You book the shipment, provide your information, and possibly pay a deposit. Several days later, particularly when your scheduled pickup is approaching, you may receive unexpected news.

The company says it can't find a carrier willing to transport your vehicle at the original rate.

A truck is available—but only if you pay more.

Now you're facing a difficult decision: accept the higher price or start searching for another transporter when you may already have a moving deadline.
