Best Trainers for Diabetics in the UK: A Guide to Comfortable Footwear

A soft upper can help reduce unnecessary pressure against sensitive areas of the foot.

Breathable materials can also improve comfort by allowing moisture and heat to escape. NHS footwear guidance recommends leather or breathable synthetic uppers rather than materials that trap heat and moisture.

Look for trainers with smooth interiors and minimal bulky seams.

How Should Diabetic Trainers Fit?

Correct fit is arguably the most important feature.

When trying on diabetic trainers:

  1. Measure both feet.
  2. Choose footwear according to the larger foot.
  3. Wear your usual socks.
  4. Try the shoes on later in the day if your feet tend to swell.
  5. Make sure your toes aren't touching the front.
  6. Check that the widest part of your foot isn't compressed.
  7. Walk around to check for rubbing.
  8. Make sure your heel remains reasonably secure.

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust recommends around 1 cm of space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. It also advises against relying on a “break-in” period if a shoe doesn't feel right initially.

Are Extra Wide Trainers Better for Diabetics?

Extra-wide trainers can be helpful when standard and wide footwear still creates pressure.

However, wider isn't automatically better. A shoe that is too loose can allow excessive foot movement and create friction.

The goal is to find a trainer that provides sufficient length, width, and depth while keeping the heel and midfoot comfortably secure.
