Annapurna Circuit Trek Elevation: The Complete 2026 Guide
AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is the most common, usually appearing 6 to 12 hours after arriving at a new elevation, with headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and poor sleep as the typical signs. A significant share of trekkers experience some form of it above 3,500m.
HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) is a severe and rare progression involving brain swelling, marked by confusion, loss of coordination, and altered consciousness. It is a medical emergency requiring immediate descent.
HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) involves fluid buildup in the lungs, with shortness of breath at rest, a persistent cough, and chest tightness. It is also a medical emergency and the leading cause of altitude related death among trekkers.
The rule that matters most in all three cases is the same: descending 300 to 500m is often enough to reverse early symptoms, and pushing higher while symptoms worsen is one of the riskiest decisions a trekker can make on this route.
What Each Altitude Band Means for Your Body
Elevation | Zone | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
Up to 2,500m | Low altitude | No significant effects for most people |
2,500m to 3,500m | Moderate altitude | First signs of reduced oxygen, mild breathlessness |
3,500m to 5,500m | High altitude | Real AMS risk, acclimatization becomes critical, oxygen around 50 to 65% of sea level |
Above 5,500m | Extreme altitude | Physiological strain regardless of how well acclimatized you are |
Thorong La sits right at the upper edge of the high altitude band, which is exactly why every acclimatization decision made in the days before crossing it matters so much.
How This Compares to Annapurna Base Camp
Trekkers weighing the Circuit against the Annapurna Base Camp trek should know the elevation profiles are quite different. ABC tops out at 4,130m (13,550ft), reached gradually over four to five days, which gives most reasonably fit trekkers a manageable acclimatization curve even without prior high altitude experience.
The Circuit is a different proposition. From Manang at 3,540m, you reach the pass at 5,416m in just two days, a change of 1,876m packed into the elevation range where AMS risk is highest. Both treks are achievable, but the Circuit demands more respect for pacing and a clearer understanding of what your body will face along the way.
