How to clean liquid cooling cpu?

The cleaning and maintenance of liquid cooled CPU systems are key to ensuring their long-term efficient and stable operation. The core lies in regularly performing three major operations: pipeline and joint inspections, filter cleaning, and coolant replacement. These steps can effectively prevent the risks of blockage, corrosion, and leakage, especially in high load data centers or overclocking scenarios.

1、 Pipeline and joint inspection: the first line of defense against leakage

Inspection frequency: It is recommended to conduct a comprehensive inspection every six months. If the system is in a vibration environment or frequently moves, it should be shortened to every quarter.

Operation steps:

Turn off the system power and stop the water pump from running.

Visually inspect all quick connectors, elbows, and welds for signs of moisture, crystallization, or microcracks.

Gently press the sealing ring area with your hand to confirm that there is no looseness or loss of elasticity.

Use a water immersion sensor or wrap the interface with a tissue and let it sit for 1 hour to check for slow leakage.

Attention:

If aging sealing rings are found, they should be replaced with original parts in a timely manner.

Avoid overtightening the joint to prevent thread damage.

2、 Filter cleaning: the core measure to prevent microchannel blockage

The filter in the liquid cooling system is used to intercept particulate matter and protect the microchannels of the cold plate (usually only 50-200 μ m wide), and its cleanliness directly affects the heat dissipation efficiency.

Cleaning frequency: once every quarter, high pollution environments can be increased to monthly.

Operation process:

Close the front and rear valves and disconnect the two ends of the filter.

Unscrew the top fastening bolt and remove the filter element.

Rinse the filter element with deionized water or use ultrasonic cleaning equipment.

Check if the filter screen is damaged and replace it with a new filter element if necessary.

After reinstallation, open the valve and observe that there is no leakage at the connection.

Recommended tools:

3、 Coolant replacement: an update project for the system's "blood"

After long-term operation, the coolant will oxidize, breed microorganisms, or absorb moisture, leading to a decrease in insulation and corrosion risk.

Replacement cycle: It is recommended to replace it every 1-2 years, depending on the usage environment and liquid type.

Operation steps:

Prepare new coolant of the same model and avoid mixing different brands or formulas.

Open the drain valve at the low point of the system, empty the old liquid, and treat the waste liquid as hazardous waste.

Rinse the pipeline with recommended coolant for a few minutes and drain the coolant.

Slowly inject new liquid from the high-level filling port until the liquid level in the expansion tank reaches 2/3 to 3/4.

Start the water pump and run it at low speed for several hours to remove bubbles and replenish the fluid to the standard line.

Testing indicators:

Electrical resistivity>1 M Ω· cm

Moisture content ≤ 50 ppm

PH value 6.5-8.5

The concentration of particulate matter complies with VDA 19.1 or ISO 16232 standards

⚠️ Special reminder: After the first replacement or major overhaul, it is recommended to conduct a 48 hour no-load operation observation to confirm that there are no leaks and the temperature and pressure difference are normal before putting it into high load use.
